Sustainable cooling? We say yes with the FROSTBIT project

March 2025
Did you know that in 2019, global greenhouse gas emissions from refrigeration systems equaled the entire carbon footprint of the European Union? With FROSTBIT, a project funded by the EIC – European Innovation Council, we are working to change that!
Our goal: to develop the first solid-state refrigerator based on barocaloric materials – an emerging technology that uses abundant, non-toxic, and efficient materials to generate cooling through pressure, without harmful gases.
What are we doing?
- Designing sustainable methods to synthesize barocaloric compounds.
- Optimizing spin-crossover (SCO) materials to improve their thermal and mechanical properties.
- Building the components of a regenerative refrigeration system based on these materials.
What do we aim for?
A prototype delivering 100 W of cooling power at room temperature, achieving a 20 K temperature span and reaching 30% of the Carnot cycle efficiency.
We’re working toward cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally friendly cooling solutions. If you’re interested in sustainable innovation, follow us to stay updated on our progress!
